How to keep your lips healthy.
Have you ever thought about what lips are and why do we have them?
Our lips serve many purpose. They are an actual organ which is for kissing and sensory and aid in articulation of speech. They also serve as the opening for food intake. The lips aid in facial expression.
We have an upper lip and a lower lip, the lower lip being larger.
The skin of the lip consists of 3 to 5 cellular layers. The skin o the lips is thinner than facial skin.
What give lips natural color? Blood vessels and melanin(pigment)which varies in different skin tones.
Our lips do not have hair, oil or sweat glands. Because of this our lips do not have the usual layer of protection. Oil glands in the skin help keep it smooth and sweat glands help to regulate our body temp, while also helping to fight off or kill pathogens(bacteria). For these reasons, the lips become dry and are easily chapped.
Keeping them moisturized. Using a lip balm in all seasons not just the winter months. It is advisable to use a lip balm that has a sunscreen in it to help prevent the lips from UV rays. Yes your lips can get sunburned.
Do not lick the lips. Licking them will only make them drier. Sometimes licking the lip is a habit that you have and must be broken. The saliva that is used to wet the lips eventually just evaporates and takes the natural lip moisture that we have with it. Licking really defeats it's thought to be purpose.
Biting your lips. Stop!! Ever heard the expression "I had to bite my lip"? It is only an expression do not do it! Biting your lip can be a very bad habit. We may bite our lips when we are nervous or anxious or sometimes while we are thinking. Sometimes this action can be very harmless but in some cases it may cause damage. Constant biting can cause soreness, inflame the lip which can lead to discomfort. BREAK THE HABIT!!
BEDTIME. Put you lips to rest. A good way to keep them healthy is to lather on the lip balm, moisturizer and if you do not have those, plain old petroleum jelly. Vaseline. There is no real healing agent in these products but they do provide lubrication and help aid in keeping moisture in the lip tissue.
